heels overhead:
why aren't you looking up?
The Photolab Gallery announces an exhibit of color
pigment photographs, titled “heels overhead” by East Bay
photographer, Charles Klein.
The show will run from January 2 to February 17, 2008 at the
Photolab Gallery, 2235 Fifth Street in Berkeley.
The exhibit is open to the public, accessible and free of charge.
A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, January
12th, from 5 to 7 pm.
Photographer Charles Klein is one of our favorite
photographers. In this exhibit, indeed in all his work, he takes us
on a fascinating journey through our own world to look at, laugh at,
puzzle over all the stuff that we look right at but do not see.
The camera is ideally suited for the job of catching fleeting
moments. Ok, but haven't we done that already? Until you see Klein's
work you are inclined to think, in these days of
post-modern-conceptual, uh, whatever-it-is, that the Cartier-Bresson
framing of the world has already been fully exploited. And if we
can't do photography quite that well, then Photoshop can fix it for
us. So the camera become a gathering tool, not a way of seeing.
Just when I was thinking that the photographer's ability to see (and
use a camera to capture) was obviated by the computer's ability to
fix what wasn't captured cleverly; just when I began to suspect that
nobody can just get it right and make me laugh at what I can see
through the photographer's eye, just then Charles Klein shows up to
give me a bit of hope.
Photographic prints by Charles Klein are available for purchase
