FAQ ABOUT PHOTOLAB PROCESSES AND TECHNIQUES

About Photolab Film Processing

Black & Whilte films: We process black & white standard films in Eastman Kodak Xtol developer at standard dilution. Xtol provides increased film speed with greater enlargability of negatives. We get great results from Xtol. We can push and pull your film in Xtol. With a few exceptions we can process all b&w film in Xtol with excellent results.

Our film processor for standard film development is a Kreonite Dip and Dunk machine with nitrogen burst agitation for even and repeatable results. We can push and pull film in quarter stop increments.

We can process all  B&W Infrared films with great success.

Other non-standard films that we can process are Technical Pan film
and Ektagraphic HC film. These require hand processing in special developers.
Many b&w film developers are still being made and are readily available.

About Photolab Film Processing by Hand  Photolab uses several special developers for customers who request hand processing to their specifications. We use Xtol 1:1, Acufine, HC110, FG7 and more (please ask) and process in tanks and reels, the traditional way.

About Photolab C41 Color Negative Film Processing  We process 135, 120 and 220 C41 color films. Push and pull service is available.

About Photolab C41 Cross Processing We can cross process color films in our C41 processsor. This means we processing slide film, usually a E6 process, in color negative chemistry. Flickr has some interesting examples of this technique.

About Photolab B& W Contact Proof Sheets  We sleeve our film in Print File plastic pages. We can make contact proof sheets through the plastic. If you haven't tried this method, try it first. It has the advantage of less handling of your film.  Print File Archival Sleeving makes film storage pages for the photographic industry.

If you specifiy we will proof your film out of the plastic page: just ask us. 35mm and 120 film is contact printed on 8 1/2 X 11 glossy paper. We use Ilford Multigrade IV. Filtered at Grade 2.5 usually.

About Photolab Black & White Proof Prints Our machine prints are printed on real black & white photo paper, also known as silver paper. The tones are neutral and rich. We use Ilford Multigrade IV and offer pearl or glossy surfaces. 35smm film can be printed on border or borderless 4x6. 120 size films are printed 4x5 or 5x5 (depending on your film format) in borderless only. We offer four print edges: borderless, soft border, clean border and black border. Take a look at some samples of our B&W proof prints with 4 border options!

Professional film scanning of your entire roll is available at time of processing. You choose 5mb tif format or 1mb jpeg written to cd or dvd.

About Photolab B&W Proof Prints on Color Paper Chromogenic films like XP2, Portra400BW, Kodak BW Select and Kodak TCN films that are processed in C41 chemistry can be successfully printed on Kodak Endura Professional paper with a completely neutral rich tonal result.

About Photolab Silver Gelatin Prints   Photolaboratory.com makes custom black and white silver gelatin prints on traditional black and white papers that have been used for generations to make the highest quality, most stable photographic images. Many of these traditional papers are still  available today. These papers, also known as silver gelatin, are washed and dried according to archival specifications. Both fiber based and resin coated papers can be toned with selenium or sepia for even more archival stability. Fiber based papers can be enhanced with these and other toners to achieve unusual results.
Please contact us for more information on these special toning services.

We use Ilford, Kentmere and any other papers we can get our hands on! We also use Oriental and Bergger papers. We have extensive experience toning cold tone and warm tone papers using special techniques to achieve stunning results. These special procedures can be effectively used in photo competitions, museum displays and commercial portrait applications for unique results that enhance a photographer's visual statement

Kind Words:
"Photolab did a great job of enlarging and modifying the prints. The spectacled, photo-geek who does the digital enlargements is the most serious professional I have met since everything has gone digital."
